Sound problem - /dev/dsp: Permission denied
I finally managed to get some sound working on my computer, however, I can only seem to get WAV files to play. When I try opening up XMMS, I get an error telling me to check my sound card configuration. When I try to play MP3s under Gqmpeg (I think that's what it's called, standard Gnome MPEG player), it says it can't access /dev/dsp.
However, I'm logged into root. I tried to chmod to 777 to see if that might fix the problem, but to know avail, I still get errors. If I try to run /dev/dsp at command prompt, I get a permission denied error there also. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. *Edit: I forgot to add the card is an ESS1869. |
/dev/dsp is a device, not a program. it shouldn't matter if the executable bit is set or not. run an ls -l on /dev/dsp to see if it's an actual node or a link, or if it just might not exist yet.

I did an ls -l /dev/dsp and got something to the effect of
Code:
[chmod info] 1 root [date] Thanks for the help so far. |
try changing your output plugins in XMMS... if you're using eSound, then use OSS, and if you're using OSS, then try eSound. you also might not have the oss module for your sound card installed. i'd check your soundcard configuration.

It was on OSS, so I went to eSound. It worked... I guess. I got no errors, however, it didn't actually play. It was going so slowly that I couldn't actually hear anything. It would take about 3 or 4 seconds for 1 second of the song to 'play'.
Any suggestions? Thanks so far. *Edit: Typos... |
