sound problem

im using a es1371 soundcard and everything is working correctly.the only problem is when im using xmms and amsn at the same time, the programs can only play one sound at a time, e.g after a song has finished, amsn sounds that should have been played before will play..which is quite annoying.how do i configure so that sounds can be played by both programs at the same time?
