To play mp3 file u need to install some plugins, which may not available in ur Linux dist.

Plz specify the version of OS u r running.

You may have to install the plugins.

In my Fedora 7 system, I have installed xmms, xmms-mp3 & xmms-wma to play mp3 & wma files.
For video u need to install some other plugins.

If u r running Fedora,

Connect to internet & use the following command to install them

"yum install xmms xmms-mp3 xmms-wma"

I can play Mp3 but not WMA.
Also, Audacity (sound file conversion/editing program)
cannot convert Wma do to patents. :(
OS: OpenSUSE 11, gnome desktop.

Also, I do not have access to the internet on my linux laptop and
now can not play mp3s. System sounds and music from games works perfectly
so i need to download the codecs. is there a music player that comes with plugins to play most formats of music and video?

vlc has the right codec's to play most video and most music file type's if you can get a copy of that you should be ok, there is a problem though with making a play list i dont use the software my self for playing music much because i chose track by track, you might be able to make a playlist in the software but i have not found such tools as of yet, worth a try though im sure you could get it working for you.

post back on if you can do it or not, also if you can get connected to the internet just for a short period of time, make sure you add all your repositories and the command to get vlc is.

ubuntu = sudo apt-get install vlc

fedora = yum install vlc

mandriva = urpmi vlc (possably something between urpmi and vlc not sure, google it)

sabayon = emerge vlc (has it in most version of sabayon as i have found)

suse = zypper in vlc

slackware = complie the tarball from the website

also if you go on the vlc website http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ you can get detailed instructions to install on most os's

hope it helps
