I have installed Fedora Core on my p4 1.7ghz 40gb hdd 256 mb ram. I am a total newbie ( i dont know anything about using linux ) . I have three problems. I guess one is not connected with linux. I have 98/xp/linux.
1) My computer went off suddenly when i was using fedora and the next time i wasnt able to boot into linux. It shows some error messages. What do I do?
2) I am unable to play any sound files in Fedora. Soundcard detection goes fine but when i open any mp3 file, it doesnt start playing even if i press play. In only one player the message stopped was displayed as soon as i pressed play. pls help ne, someone told me that i needed to download xmms. what do i do with the rpm file? i dont know anything.
3) This is not linux connected. my system turns off suddenly, at any time. before a week, the computer used to get overheated hence i changed a cpu fan that wasnt working. now it doesnt get overheated but turns off anytime!!!! That is the reason for the first problem.

What error messages does it display?

To install an rpm, as root, do
rpm -ivh rpmfile.name
in an Xterminal or the console.

Someone help me!!!!!!!!
Maybe the CPU overheated so much that it is damaged and that is why it keeps turning off? Is it still under warranty? Get them to replace the CPU and / or RAM and motherboard until it works.
Sorry mate. I am not that good at sound systems in Linux :-( . Further, the switching off of ur PC looks to be some kind of an incompatibility problem with the new CPU fan. Probably u can set it right by setting the Advanced Power Management off in the BIOS and also, I think there is an apm service in linux that u can turn off.
Am not too sure though. even I am a Linux newbie (RHEL 3) :-)
