sound problem

I am Newbie to linux but slowly making progress, or so i thought. I am running mandrake 9.1 on a dual boot with win xp pro. i have been able to play music and CD's on linux up untill today. i logged on an a sound server informational message appeared. It says,

" error when initializing the sound drive. Device : default can't be opened for play back (no such file or directory). the sound server will continue using the null output device ".

I have checked to ensure that nothing has been muted and restarted the machine completly hoping it would sort itself out, but no joy. Can anyone help ?

at a command prompt type: alsamixer and unmute all settings and turn the volume up 100%. If that doesn't work, go to the alsa website, search for help on your precise sound card. Download the 3 alsa files and follow the directions.

I tried messing around with my sound for 3 weeks. I am there was an easier way for an experienced user, but just reinstalling alsa was the only option for me.
