I've finally sorted my sound-card to be loaded as a module (yipee!) but if I want to hear anything at all, I have type modprobe sb at the command prompt. This is not a major hassle (compared to what I've already put myself through :D), but it would be much nicer if I could have sound working from the word go. Which config file should I be editing in order for 'modprobe sb' to be run at start-up (so that all users have sound)?

Also, when I recompiled my kernel (now 2.4.2) I enabled automount filesystems, but I also have amd (or whatever it's called, the automounter daemon) start on booting. However, my floppy/cdrom do not automount (my Windows partitions do, however). Is this a problem with having both running (kernel automounter and amd) or do I need to edit my fstab (what do I have to add to the cdrom and floppy parameters?). I am quite happy with mounting/umounting my cdrom/floppy, but it's quite annoying having my house-mate complaining You're CD drive's not working! and then having to explain to him about mounting (yet again!). Would be a lot easier if the bloody thing automounted.

Oh, yeah, since my university uses quite a few Apple Macs, how easy would it be to have my Linux Box (running Mandrake 7.2) automount Mac floppies aswell?

there is a troubleshooting section, might want to read thru that.
not sure on the automount, you could always edit fstab of course but i would stick a post it note for your roomie on the monitor so he stops bugging you, or do it to get on his nerves, isn't that what roomates are for anyways. :)
