SOUND on sony vaio please help

I am writing again regarding the sound (all sounds ie on startup, on audio cds) on my Sony VAIO PCG_GRZ515G laptop. I've searched almost all the help sessions and found only bits and pieces of information regarding having NO SOUND on statup in KDE installed on Redhat 7.3. I also do not have any sound when i try to play a cd. the machine seems to be reading the audio cd, but no sound comes out. The sound works fine in Windows XP (i have dual boot). The volume is cranked in the mixer, sound server, and system bell... I've noted some hopefully useful information below:

I ran /sbin/sndconfig and found out that my soundcard is:
Intel Crop.|82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio

Running sndconfig gives me no errors, except that when the system is supposed to play a test sound, it doesn't.

When I look at dmesg it contains the following lines near the bottom:
Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.21, 07:42:52 Apr 18 2002

when i type /sbin/lsmod is get the following:
[root@geodyn bin]# /sbin/lsmod

then, i went to /lib/modules/2.4.18-3 and when i ls i've got the following files:

[root@geodyn 2.4.18-3]# ls
build modules.parportmap
kernel modules.pcimap
modules.dep modules.pnpbiosmap
modules.generic_string modules.usbmap
modules.ieee1394map pcmcia

i saw in a previous help session that one suggestion was to "modprobe the module" but i don't know which one !!

when i look in /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/sound
ans do an ls is have:

[root@geodyn sound]# ls
