hey it's linux forum .. k i think ur sound card's device driver is uninstalled or disturbed. Just check it first that either ur soudn card is properly installed and working or not.
Right click on My Computer>>Properties... a system properties window will open.. go to Hardware>>Device Manager.... now Device Manager window will be opened.. Go to Sound, video and game controllers n expand it.. Check eitehr they are properly installed or they r showing a yellow sign.... click on Audio Codecs and check the 'device status' there will be written either "This device is working properly." OR "This device is not working properly."...

If it's the case of not working then it means that the driver is not installed .. just inster the CDROM u got with your computer ... n reinstall the sound driver..
Hope it will help u ...

also check it through DirectX

Go to Start Menu>>Run n type their

dxdiag

directX will be open.. click on Sound tab .. n check the Notes section on botom .. if it says

. To test DirectSound functionality, click the "Test DirectSound" button above.
. No problems found.
then it means that ur sound card is ok .. other wise u might reinstall the driver.

Ok now the last solution that came into my mind is to open Start Menu > programs > Accesseries > Entertainment > Voulme Control..
If it's opening the voulme control then it means that ur driver is working alright check any option there..
BUT if it says someting like No Mixer Available.. then it definetly means that ur Audio Driver is distrubed n u have to reinstall it
