sound in rh9

I am having trouble with my sound blaster live 5.1 I am getting absolutle no sound when trying to play mp3 or CD. I DLed xmms and I see the files playing but no sound. In sound card detection I see the card and I play the test sound and get sound.

I have tried following some other posts but my system wont run the commands lsmod and sndconfig logged in as root.

By default RH9 does not support MP3 support out of the box. You can download a package for it Here

Hope this helps.
