Sound in mandrake 9.1

there is something wrong with my sound, i think i might have overlooked something during installation, but when i try to set up my sound in the control center i get this error message

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

how can i make my sound work??

thanks

Do you have a file named /dev/dsp ?? Are you logged in as root or a regular user? If you do have a /dev/dsp, what are the permissions of that file ?
