Sound has stopped working in Ubuntu 6.10

I do not know why. I don't remember doing anything or changing any of the system settings. There's nothing wrong with my hardware as they play the audio properly on Windows. The audio applet on the taskbar shows the volume at normal and it's not muted.

This is not related to a particular application, but to any application that plays sound in Ubuntu. Any help would be appreciated.

I've solved the problem by increasing the volume to 100% Anything below 90% is inaudible and anything less than 100% but above 90% is audible if you listen very carefully. The same settings in Windows will make the volume very loud. Any suggestions to make the volume distribution over the bar uniform?
