i installed slackware 9.1 a few days ago on my new laptop and have not been able to get sound running at an acceptable quality

during playback the sound is very distorted cutting out every second or so then coming back at a poor quality

my laptop is a sony z1rmp im not sure what sound card it has as i could not find the specification

is there a gui in kde/gnome for configuring sound? i would appreciate any help/suggestions on solving this proble

thanks

As you can hear some sounds I assume you already unmuted alsamixer.
The problem you're having should be due to the quality/compatibility of your sound card.
From the gui start aumix and reduce pcm and cd channels to maximum 75%.
If the sound volume becomes too low, raise up the overall volume to 85% or more.
Then, as root, "alsactl store" will save the new defaults.
This should improve the sound quality of your laptop
If you want to know what sound card you have installed run as root
lspci -v > myhardconf
that will save a text file containing some useful infos about your hardware.
Hope this helps
Ciao
