Sound card works but CD player doesn't make a sound?

For some reason the autodetection on the soundcard works fine and I hear the little trumming guitar but everytime I attempt to play a CD I can't hear anything? The CD is playing but there is no sound... do I have to associate the sound card with the system in some other way?

So is the system muted?
is the drive plugged in correctly?
i know there is a digital cable that needs to be connected for it to read correctly.
Is the player configured to read it correctly?
xmms has a few options that need to be tweeked for it to read correctly?
is it a store purchased cd?
or is it stored files (ie mp3)

Ah... that make make more sense!!

The audio connector is not plugged into the drive. I had assumed that it worked like windows reading the data off digitally!

I'm ripping the CD to OGG to see if I can play those back. If I can that would explain it. Cheers for the help :)
