sound card will not load

I have just purchased red hat professional workstation. The installation cds are for enterprise linux version 3. The software was installed on a dell latitude. The install went finet fine, but after installation, the sound card would not load. There is no indication as to what the problem might be other than the driver might be incampatible with Linux. there are too many references to the driver working for that to be the case. The drivers were supplied on the Linux cds. There is one strange message that shows up during boot, but does not stop the system from coming up. It indicates that 256 megabytes of memory is required for the existing configuration, but only 248 are available.
