sound card volume

i want to increase the output volume. i have ubuntu installed on
dell inspiron 6400.

Open a terminal and type alsamixer when it comes up you navigate with the arrow keys, to increase/lower volume use the up/down arrow keys to unmute/mute use the m key, to exit press Esc.
