I cant get any sound from my sound card I have tried all the simple fixex but to no avail. Its listed in the HCL but when I try to play a test sound I get nothing. Any ideas?

Distro your using? Details, like any error messages, what kind of card is it... ? We can't assume and fix your problem when you don't give us anything useful to work with. We don't have ESP you know...
what does " cat /dev/sndstat" report ?
did you try to increase the volume ?
what happens if you "cat /some/sound/file >/dev/audio"
can you "play /some/sound/file" ?
