sound card problem

Hello,

I am currently running Slackware 10.2 kernel 2.4.26 and my sound card is giving me a few problems. I have an older Dell Dimension 4100 Pentium 3 with 256mb of ram. My sound card is a Gamesurround Muse Lt Audio Device.

One problem is my sound is muffled. The other is that I whenever I use applications such as Gaim or Totem movie player the sound goes away after a few hours and I can no longer hear anything.

Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to rectify this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Define "muffled" does the sound coming out of the speakers sound like it's "muddy"? Have you tried to use headphones to see if it's the speakers you're using?

Also what sound system are you using ALSA or OSS?

I have tried another set of speakers. In fact, when I had Windows Server 2003 on this pc the speakers worked fine. I am using small desktop speakers from Polk Audio, nothing special at all. The sound is relatively loud with poor quality.

I am using ALSA.

try muting everything in alsamixer except Master and PCM
