Sound Card Issues - Audigy

I recently installed Red Hat 9 and when going through my hardware, almost everything went smooth. RH detects my sound card (Sound Blaster Audigy) and it looked like it was going to work - except it doesn't. When it plays the test sounds I'm not getting anything. Just to make sure, I booted back into XP and it still worked as expected. Anyone experience this problem? Thanks.

RedHat 9.0 uses ALSA for its sound drivers, and if I remember correctly the volume is all the way down immediately after install and you have to turn it up manually.
Open up a terminal and type 'alsamixer' (without the quotes) and then adjust your voulme and see if that does the trick.

Thanks, I'll try that tonight. I'll feel pretty stupid if that is the culprit

You might have to have a little peak at the system to make sure that it has set the audigy() driver. My mandrake always detects my soundblaster live! 5.1, but for some reason it offers me both the audigy() and emu10k1() drivers, and while my card uses the emu10k1, I always have to change it as it seems to default to the audigy - alphabetical I suppose

I was under the impression they actually didn't use ALSA...:

Did they change this up in 9.0? That'd be great! Thanks for info, I'll see if I can dig around and find out...

Cool

I'm having no luck with this card as of yet. I tried to run 'alsamixer' but I got "command not found". Instead, I searched for a while and found 'gnome-volume-control' which is essentially a mixer. All of the volume levels were set about half way and still no sound at all. In the mixer that I found it says it's using the emu10k1() drivers. Is that the default?

Also, my audigy platinum card is the one that also has the interface in the front of my box as well as the back. It's the external version. Does this have anything to do with it?
I didn't think I'd have such a tough time getting this card to work with Linux. Anyone have some suggestions for a desperate newbie?;)

It looks like you don't have the alsa-utils installed if (as root) alsamixer isn't coming up. Also, make sure your distro isn't loading the emu10k1 that was the old kernel driver, and is loading the new emu10k1 from ALSA, you can check by typing (as root):
lsmod

Thanks to everone who offered up help with my sound card issue. As it turned out, the problem was my Logitech USB camera. When I unplugged it, the sound card worked perfectly! I won't worry about the camera right now though.

:D No worries, that's the kind of thing you love to happen. Much better than something truly wrong, right? ;)

Cool

Well I've tried a the methods you've described to get sound working on my RH9 system, but both commands when run as root tell me "command not found"
How do I fix this?
