Sound Card Configuration
 

OK,

Here's another mind boggler I'm sure (Sarcastic)!! I need to configure my sound card in RedHat Linux. I have an ESS Maestro something. Is there a sound configuration tool built in, like Xconfigurator?? I'd really appreciate any helo, Thanks in Advance!!

sndconfig will do it.. and if you have redhat 7.0 or later.. Setup will do it from the command line as well.

I've tried using both setup and sndconfig, but it says that both the commands are not found. I also tried running them from a command line as a SuperUser but I still got the same result, any ideas?

and you tried Setup with a capital S, it is case sensitive. not sure on sndconfig, its been awhile since i last used it... yes, definitely need to be root. did you su into root or login? if you su'ed, then try logging in as root on another terminal, it could be a problem with the paths when su'ing into root.

If you want root's paths when you use su , then use su - instead.

I am pretty sure these commands can be found in /sbin.

Since you are using redhat, try using the locate command

locate sndconfig
locate Setup

There is a Sound Card Configuration Tool in RH 9 (GUI) but it is highly unreliable, at least in my situation. I just installed my old AWE64 after the 16 bit card died on me. Kudzu found the card and configured it right up. Except that when I went to check the configuration under Gnome, the Sound Card Configuration tool told me there was no sound card! I spent a good two hours researching the problem, even tried playing a CD. No sound.

Then I switched to KDE. The CD started playing as soon as the GUI loaded! I went back to the SC Configuration Tool--STILL no sound card detected!

Maybe it has something to do with being an ISA card. Maybe not. All I can say is that if you don't get any results from the config tool, it's probably the tool--not the sound card.

(It probably didn't help me either that I'm still using my old 2x CD Drive--it takes Gnome forever to get the thing to play anything, which was probably why I thought it wasn't working originally.)

I also observed that sndconfig didn't install automatically on RH. Not sure how other distros deal with this.
