I am having trouble getting this thing to work,
I have followed all the instructions I could, but still no go. I think I have all the right modules installed, but am not to sure on how to find out. i got the alsa drivers, utils, library and installed.. (not sure how to use them) the emu10k1 , and all the other stuff i needed, installed, but when i start xmms , i get that "couldn't open audio" please check that: 1. you have the correct output plugin selected (how do i do that) 2 no other program is blocking the soundcard (nfi how to do this either) 3 your soundcard is configured porperly (?) specs: celeron 400 256mb ram geforce 2 mx 400 sb live! slack 8.1 really comfortable chair, i think ill be here for a while. please let me know what info would help to get this thing working, loving it so far, would like to get sound working tho... thanx |
Welcome to LQ :)
Post up the results of typing (as root): lsmod (LSMOD lowercase) ls -lh /dev/dsp (LS -LH lowercase) And what steps you followed when setting up the ALSA driver. Cool |

hmmm, still no lubbin from the LQ phenom,
hehe, im a bit impatient, soz, Ive read every forum i can find, but still no worky, i probably screwed it up royally by now, staring at screen hitting refresh every 5 secs for tha last couple of hours, fun |
There should have been quite a bit more info from the 'ls -lh /dev/dsp' command. Mainly looking for the permissions and ownership info (the rxw and root root info) to see how that looks on that device. Next, none of the ALSA modules are loaded, so either you didn't edit your /etc/modules.conf Or something went wrong in the install process and you don't have the modules necessary to run ALSA. You really don't need ALSA to get your SB Live working in Slack 8.1, however if you want to continue, I'll do my best to stick this one out with you.
First off, be sure to follow ALL of the instructions on the alsa website for your card, especially the snddevices portion (often left out). If you don't want/need to use ALSA, you can always call up the emu10k1 module, be sure to give your users proper permissions on the devices: chmod 644 /dev/dsp /dev/mixer Cool |
DONE!!!
you know your lamers dude, just about everything you said there went wrong, but it seems to work now, thanx heaps, Nice OS Mr Gates, do they make it in mens? |
Word! :D Glad I could help, or at least I think that's what you mean  ;)
