Sony Viao VGN870E laptop

My Matshita UJ850S optical drive has not worked since I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate. The device manager always says that the device is working properly. I'm too cheap to pay to find the fix for this drive. I have also upgraded the RAM to 2gB and hard drive to 1TB. I would like some suggestions as to which Linux program would work best on this laptop, either 32 or 64 bit so that the optical drive also works the way it should. The last Linux program I tried with no success was Open Suse 42.3 64 bit.

Try Knoppix. It is a "live" USB. Installation instructions here.
