Somekinde of distro help needed!
 

In the area where I live I was the first linux user a couple of mounts ago... after the first time I boot my linux I fall in "love" with it... so i tryed ti figure out a way to do something for it... because I'm not a programmer I started to be a "Linux promoter"! So I started to show my Linux to all my friend and convienced them to use it... I install and maintain their Linux if needed... most of them choose Linux because it's speed... and I run in to a problem: one of my friend has an older pc (128 RAM Amd Duron@1300Mhz and 32MB S3 built in agp) I tried to install Mandrake 10.2 but there where some sound issues... Now I tried Mandriva 2006... No sound issues no hardware detection problem! The only problem is: the pc is still wery slow like win xp (if not slower, the Mandriva readme said that it needs 700Mhz CPU and 64MBRam:confused: ) The pc is needed in general for music, movies and sometimes for some text editing! Is there a better distro for that pc and a totaly newbie user? Or how could I make it faster!
I allredy tried with other desktop enviroment than KDE but it loocked like KDE beeing the fastest! Could it be because of the RAM fragmentation...?:scratch:

Probably too many services running. Disable services which are not required.

Suse is nice too.

Some distros for him might be something like slax, knoppix, phlak, ubuntu, dsl.

I'd recommend slax, it's easy to install modules for newer users.

I got Suse 10.0 I tried that one at another frend but there where no video codecs! And my frend doasn't have internet connection...
he called me a few minutes ago and he said that he can/t even run amarok or any other application normally because linux hangs!!!:confused:

Rather than switching distros, you might be able to just change the gui. Look into some of the light window managers like xfce or fluxbox

First off, I'm sure you don't want to hold everyones hand on every issue they
have or will have. But since it appears atleast to start with you will be
helping all your friends along, I'd suggest trying to keep them on all the same
distro. For #1, it'll be easier on you (as I'd guess it'd be the distro you are most
familiar with) and #2, Then they could eventually help eachother as I'm sure some
may catch on faster then others, this would take you out of the support loop.

The 128MB is doable, just a little less then prefered. But just becuase there was a
sound issue, I don't think you should have replaced it. A 1.3GHz is not THAT old, and
I'm sure unless it was WAY ODD, the soundcard could have been setup to work just fine.

Just some random thoughts thrown in your direction.

they were? :S fluxbox is VERY light, not overly impressive on the eye candy but it''s not bad.

Debian is a good distro

Yes that's one reason why I stay with Mandrake/Mandriva distros and they are also wery easy for newcomers!

I was also thinking to switch back to Mandrake 10.2 and better mess with sound issue... it's on AC97 onboard sound card and the issue was that the sound was choppy and dindn't stop right when stoppet or didn't start when you wanted...

I don't want to try Debian until I don't get used enough with Linux, I just switced a few months ago and I heve pretty much to learn about Linux...
But thanks anyway I will defenetly try Debian in the future...
