Some trouble installing Elementary OS

Hi everyone.
Earlier I posted a reply on a thread about a problem with partitions while installing Elementary OS Freya as dual-boot, and yancek answered giving me a link with a tutorial (thank you!).

However, after I continue with the installation it stopped with an error saying that grub wasn't installed, something like that. But when I start my computer (with USB boot priority), pops a window with the option to 'Try Elementary..." and "Install Elementary..." and if I press Esc a grub console appears. Doesn't that mean grub is installed? What should I do to fix this?

Best regards,
a Linux amateur

It sounds as if you still might be booting to the USB stick. What happens when you shutdown the computer, remove the USB stick, and then boot the computer?

It goes straight to Windows 8.1 (main OS)

So you need to reinstall grub. Boot usb again - you probably have a try it out option or something. Enter the terminal and reinstall grub.

as to per your previous post, which i cannot find anymore.
about partitions 1, about partitions 2.
it seems to me you have to start again from scratch, something probably went wrong there.

Ok so, what I should do? Start over again from scratch or reinstall grub?

With windows 8.1, was it preinstalled or did you install it? As a general rule, if it was preinstalled it was installed in UEFI mode so you would need to install Elementary in UEFI. Did you see that option when originally booting from the installation media? If it was UEFI, you should have a FAT32 partition at the beginning of the drive, usually around 200MB in size which would contain the EFI files for windows and Elementary. Can you boot the Elementary installation media and take a look at the partitions by mounting them to see what is there?

It might be easier to download and run the bootinfoscript from the Elementary installation media or the boot repair. Links below:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

If you use the bootrepair script, select the option to Create a Bootinfo Summary and post the output here.

Windows 8.1 was installed by default. I'm going to use that Boot-repair to get that info that you requested.

By the way i just noticed now that when I set the boot priority in BIOS i have these options:
- Kingstone USB (...)
- UEFI: Kingstone USB (...)
- Windows Boot (...)

Kingstone USB(...) is the device i have elementary OS to install (and you'll see that it's already installed if I show you the partitions).

Plus, that situation that I reported in my first post in this thread happens when I boot from UEFI: Kingstone USB(...)

that looks pretty weird to me.
but i'm sorry to say i'm no uefi expert.
still, it looks to me like you have to start from scratch (including the creation of the usb stick installation media) - but this time inform yourself beforehand.
probably elementary have some wiki/howto on their webpage.

Your output shows Elementary installed on sda8 and the only file shown is /etc/fstab. Normally some boot files (grub.cfg, core.img) show here. Not sure what option you chose to install bootloader files. You have an efi partition with the windows efi files showing but no ubuntu/elementary efi files so it won't boot. I've never used Elementary but since it is Ubuntu based, I would expect an option somewhere in the install to select to install using UEFI/GPT.

The boot repair output shows a recommended option to install grub-efi for Elementary to the efi partition. That might work but I don't use UEFI so really can't say.

As others have already suggested it would be better to boot in uefi mode and reinstall.

This would be the correct way to boot and install for things to work correctly with windows aready preinstalled.

No, This is normal for booting in efi mode from usb, the grub menu is from the usb booting in efi mode. Install/reinstall elementary.
