some questions must get old, sorry for that MP3 rathat 9.2
 

I am currently wanting to use and become more skilled with Linux. I have been a supporter of RedHat since the 5.2 series. Though note I have only installed one of the releases before this one.

Currently have Redhat 9.2 installed when I tried to play an MP3 it said it was a no go. Now after reading a few posts based on the same issue I downloaded xmms and installed it.

I have sinced noticed a few problems with my install. 1) cannot hear what is playing, though sounds card is working and does play other items like the test sound card sound. 2) it plays the file so fast that on the recorder that if I could hear it, it would sound like chipmonks of the crack.

If there is any thing I can do to fix these problems please let me know, and please remember that I am a Newbie and I will need instruction like a newbie.

The xmms rpm that comes with the cd sucks, :)
There is no mp3 support, you should get the rpm from elsewhere like: http://freshrpms.net/ /
or you can install from source.
make sure you uninstall the old xmms before installing the new one.

But when I am running the system in the root profile I do not have the problem, in fact it works great.

Then it may be a permission problem. 'chmod 765 /dev/dsp' or something of that nature to give your users permission to access the sound device. But usually it's because of the lack of mp3 support that redhat refused to provide during that release. Grabbing the xmms-mp3 with apt rpm or yum should get it going.

Got yum? Try this:

yum update
yum install xmms-mp3

I take it the default yum repositories in your /etc/yum.conf should carry that package for your xmms. That way no need to remove the old one.

Or just download the
xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm
from
http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.....7-21.i386.rpm
and install it
