Some Questions and Opnions needed regarding Linux Server Configurations..Thank You :)

Good Day People of the World...

As you all should know by now, i am horible at Linux/Unix and this is the 1st time i am trying to configure a server...Ur Help and professional advice is much needed and appreciated....Thank You..Sincerely

My Company has decided to use an existing Old PC (Pentium 4 - 3.0Ghz,512 RAM,2 X 40GB HDD) and transform it to a Linux server for web and email services to support about 100 users

From all the kind replies i got in my previous thread, this is how i planned to arrange the partitions on 2 seperate 40GB HDD

Hard Disk Drive 1
- Root partition(200MB)
- Swap(512MB)
- /user(5GB)
- /backup(4.5GB)

Hard Disk Drive 2
- /tmp (2.5GB)
- /var (10 GB)
- /home (150MB per user * 100 Users = 15GB)
- Swap (512MB)

Is this configuration ok for a Linux server support 100 users for email and web services? Are there any other critical partition i left out?
Is the space i allocated to each partition too much ?
Any recommendations on how i place my partitions? Please feel free to comment...Thanks !

Misc Questions....I have these questions popping up into y head as i was thinking of the planned configration...Hope you all can spare a bit of ur time to kindly enlighten me and clear my confusion....Thanks!

1) As we all know, /boot,/etc,/var,/temp,/etc,/home,/user,/backup are major directories in Linux. Is it ok for me to allocate a partition to each of these major partition instead of placing them in directories? ANy consequences or considerations i should take note of?

*assuming that all the major directionaries are partitions instead*

2) Whats the differences between root partition and /boot partition?

3) /etc partitions - other than configuration files...any other use?

Please feel free to comment or criticise or email me lionelx83@hotmail.com

Greatly, really, desperatly need all ur help...

Thank You Once again..

Yours Sincerely,Truly,Faithfully
Lionel

Does this mobo/HD array support RAID?? if so... for server purposes.. your drives should be mirorred rather than simply split...

40 GB should be plenty for nothing more than email and web hosting.. that way if you're mirorred you have an exact duplicate should one of the HDs go bad.. (I don't think you want to burdon of everyone's email disappearing on your shoulders)

putting them in seperate partitions is (shouldn't be) not a problem, unless you lose a hard-drive :/
