Some output and manpages have weird symbols instead of quotes

I'm getting an accented letter a like this: â

Instead of quotes in some places. I'm running Debian Lenny. Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it? It's just a minor nuissance really.

By the way, this is showing up in my std error output while doing some compiling, but it also shows up in man pages for example.

possible reasons comes to this; messages character encoding and fonts that used to show them is different. probably, it uses wrong font to snow them for some unknown reason (maybe you chose wrong font for it. i did it.).

what's your locale? (locale commands output). check console font documentation. (or terminal emulator's font documentation).
