Some newbie questionz ;-)

Hello,

after some time I decided to go back 2 Linux and I've just inastalled
Slackware 10.0 and experienced some problems...

Well, the Slackware installed flawlessy, but - unfortunately - there's
a strange login problem...
I Input my username (root) and my password and it looks like that
Slack accepts it, however it displays things like last login time, saying
etc. but then prompts me to input login user and pass once again...
... so what's going on? Anyone has any idea?

1. This would be the first questions....

These ara the following ones :-)

I am hesitatning between installing Knoppix or Slackware, I need Linux
mostly for everdyday work like:
- e-mail checkink
- web browsing
- simple www sites manipulation (FTP and some editor)
- peer2peer dwl
- Int. communicator chatting
- graphic manipulation using GIMP etc.

2. What doistro would be the most suitable for me in such a case?

3. Slackware mouse scrolling problem. Well, I used 2 have slack 10
about 3 months ago and I had the problem that scroll button on my
M$ USB cordless mouse didn't work? Any idea here?

4. How to change default window manager on an already installed system?
I amtalkin' 'bout Slack and Knoppix...

5. Where do I chose screen res and refresh freqs in Slack/GNOME?

6. Lest's sa that 4 exmple I would like to have / and /var /tmp /usr /home
on different partitions, I know how to make it in Slack but how 'bout Knoppix?

7. Is there possibility to write NTFS partitions in Slack/Knoppix. If so,
how _sure_ is it? How do I make it work? From what I see,in default it
is a RO mode :->

8. Does Slack 10.0 have any kind of firewall implemented when I install it
form scratch?

9. I know how to use apt-get, but could anyone give me a link to a _human_
explanation of how tarballs work? I.e. how to install TB so that they go where
they should and show in relevant folders/pop-up menus...?

btw. what kind of hardware do I need 2 run through Wine or Crossover
(btw. what's the difference between them?) win appz like Photoshop,
Premiere, Audition, Flash really _comfortably_ ?

Ok.. so far... so good...

Thanks for advice :-)

Speakin about Ubuntu and Knoppix - will I see any _real_life_ difference
between them?

Ubuntu is GNOME based and has more updates than any other Debian based distro..
Some of its developers are also part of the Debian crew.
I recommend it as well.
