Some info that has helped me

The notes that follow have been reaped from various people compiling text to help others, this is what has helped me, your welcome to use and abuse it. (or add to it)

FEDORA CORE UPDATES:

OPEN A TERMINAL (SU TO ROOT)

TYPE UPDATEDB

WHEN DONE TYPE "YUM UPDATE" (TAKES A WHILE)

WHEN DONE TYPE "YUM UPGRADE" (TAKES A WHILE)

FOR APT:

GOTO FRESHRPMS.NET (SEARCH FOR APT)

DOWNLOAD THE TWO FILES

OPEN A TERMINAL (SU TO ROOT)

TYPE RPM -Uvh APT* (THIS WILL INSTALL BOTH PACKAGES AT ONCE)

THEN TYPE UPDATEDB (?)

THEN TYPE APT GET UPDATE

THEN TYPE APT GET UPGRADE

FOR EXAMPLE: APT GET INSTALL MPLAYER*

TO SEE WINDOWS SHARES IN NAUTILUS OR KONQUERER

IN ADDRESS BAR TYPE SMB://192.168.1.100/C (IP ADDRESS THEN THE SHARED FOLDER)

TO REMOVE LILO OR GRUB

WINXP - LINUX DUAL BOOT BOX

BOOT FROM THE XP CDROM

CHOOSE RECOVERY CONSOLE

LOG INTO THE XP INSTALL

AT THE PROMPT TYPE FIXMBR

THEN TYPE EXIT AND REBOOT

COMPILING PACKAGES FROM SOURCE

TAR ZXF FILENAME.TAR.GZ

./CONFIGURE

MAKE

MAKE TEST (OPTIONAL)

MAKE INSTALL

IF USING KDE

DOWNLOAD K3B TO BURN CDS

IF K3B GIVES AN ERRROR THAT NO CDRDAO DRIVER COULD BE FOUND

SET IT MANUALLY IN THE SETTINGS DIALOG (FOR MOST DRIVES ENTER 'GENERIC-MMC'

TO INSTALL MPLAYER FOR LINUX

COPY THIS WHOLE LINE INTO A CONSOLE AS ROOT:

rpm -Uvh mplayer-common-1.0pre3try2-1.i386.rpm mplayer-gui-1.0pre3try2-1.i386.rpm mplayer-skin-default-1.0-2.noarch.rpm lame-libs-3.95.1-1.i386.rpm
