Some fluxbox questions

Hi i am using fluxbox and i was wondering if it was possible to add folders and directories to the desktop. Please explain step by step how to do so if it is possible as i only just converted from win xp.

Also i like fluxbox alot but there is one thing that annoys me. Is it possible to get the programs that are active to stay permantly active in the taskbar? it is becoming annoying that i have to alt+tab to each program with no idea how many browsers are running etc. I realise the tasakbar only shows what has been minimised but i find it a botehr to have to minmise everything to do something else......

Thank you for your help.

Since fluxbox is designed to be lightweight, it doesn't natively support icons on the desktop. However, there is add-on called fbdesk that allows you to have icons on your fluxbox desktop.

If the slit is annoying you, you might want to try using tabs. Personally, I think it is one of the nicest features of fluxbox. If you are using the stable version, the tabs stick up above the top bar of each application window. Just click with both mouse buttons on the tab and drag one tab on top of another. The windows will re-size and you can flip from one to the other just by clicking on the tab. In the development versions of fluxbox (which I highly recommend), the tab has been integrated into the top bar of the window. If you do the 2-button click on that bar, it behaves exactly like the earlier tabs.

And one thing I forgot.... If you click on the workspace name (on the left side of the slit, it says "one" when you are on workspace one, "two" if you are on workspace two etc.), fluxbox will bring up a workspace menu of all four wokspaces and the apps running in them. You can use this to easily jump to any app in any workspace.

You can alter the mode of the taskbar in the devel releases, so it's off, shows nothing, shows iconified windows, shows active windows, and you can choose between just the apps on one workspace or all of them.
