Software Sources UNREACHABLE !!!

Hey

Ive installed Linux Mint 18 Sarah bout a month ago, and all was going fine until now where i cannot access updates and new software because all software repositories are unreachable

And when i update the cache i get this message:

Quote:
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.
Note: I have no proxies or vpn running

Thanks in advance

Hi & welcome to LQ!
Could it be that: you [simply] can't access the internet?
Can you open a 'terminal' [window] and `ping yahoo.com` ?
(or run a web browser...) Is there more to the error msg?
We'd need more 'clues' to debug what's wrong. Best wishes!
EDIT: p.s. If it's not this simple (and it probably isn't!), try
a web-search of [simply] the whole error message: I found this (LQ Thread)
and many very-different causes, so more 'clues' may be needed to narrow this down.

jjanel touched the first point. please do what they asked, or even better:
Code:
ping yahoo.com
ping 8.8.8.8
post output from both commands.

the other point:
sources.
linux mint complicates things, because it has a gui for everything, so there's 2 ways of doing this.

1. there must be a gui somewhere in your menu, for software sources.
see if they are correct and up-to-date (consult linux mint wiki/forums/help community for that).

2. post the output of this command:
Code:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.d/*

No /etc/apt files? Wow, did something happen to apt or your whole system?
Tell us more about what you *think might* have happened...

I deleted the CD additional repository

Maybe a proxy is limiting access to Internet

Is there any way i can know if i have a proxy running covertly ? Like a code to purge all proxies.

Try `apt update` (from that LQ link I posted earlier).
Do you have any other reasons/'clues' that indicate a net-access issue? (prob not)
I found this from searching: CD additional repository (I don't know what that means!)
Quote:
Open and login to the Software Sources program, Click the Additional Repositores, and uncheck the cd-rom entry, and then click the "Update the cache" button in the upper right.
But I'm a "Newbie" on this, and don't use Linux 'GUI' at all.

i got this as a response

Quote:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

Oh, is the 'Software Sources GUI' running while you tried this?
Just try: "and then click the "Update the cache" button in the upper right."
Separately,
Exit that GUI *before* you try to run apt 'CLI' commands (sorry, I'm learning too!)

p.s. my Ubuntu 16.04.1 (on which Mint is based I think)
doesn't have a /etc/apt/sources.d (it does have sources.list)
Here's a command to try: find /etc/apt -type f -ls

Oh, in that http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...failed-903066/ apt update has sudo.

Did you try the: "...click the "Update the cache" button in the upper right."?

Post [a `cat` of] /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

Quote:
Unable to get exclusive lock

This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first.

Code:
lsof /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
pgrep apt (oh, you said none running)
ls -l /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
See if any of this helps....
