Hello.
I am thinking of switching to Linux from Win. 98. I am worried, however, that I will have to give up a lot of my programs because they don't say they will run on Linux. I heard somwhere that Linux will run any program made for Windows. Is this true or not??????

in a nutshell...no.It is like taking Office for apple and trying to install and run it in Windows.You can use something like VMware but it is a resource hog and the programs run slow.Your best bet is to dual boot(install Linux on some free space or a different hd)and switch between them.I did that almost 4 years ago and now only use
Windows for NetMeeting because I bought a cam that is not supported in Linux(I knew it at the time I bought it).

How do I double boot?
 

So, then how do I get Linux to install on my HD without erasing Windows?

Well it is true though, you could run any windows program under Linux using Wine. Try this site, explains where and how to install wine.

Though I heard its still unstable, mostly by people saying usually you would run into problems with it as much as rebooting your windows machine, so it can't be that bad.

you can partition your hard drive. using FIPS or Partition Magic to get a nice home for linux. what programs are you wanting to use that linux doesnt have?

Other than games, I can name a few programs that Linux won't run: IrfanView (It has the thumbnail and crop features that the GIMP lacks), Sonique (media player), and pretty much ANY video player other than RealPlayer.

I'm pretty new to Linux, so I don't know what the alternatives are, yet. I bought my first copy of Maximum Linux (because Maximum PC has been so good to me), but it doesn't look like it's going to live up to the Maximum PC standards of program-delivery.
