Software and drivers for Linpus Linux lite v.1.0.9

I recently bought an acer aspire one notebook with a Linux OP.

However, I am having some problems finding drivers for certain external accessories such as the Bandluxe HSDPA wireless USB Dongle Modem and an IB-250 StU external hard drive (Icy box).

Can anyone direct me on how to connect these accessories to my aspire one?

Thanks

Hi,

Did you looked at
http://www.linpus.com/

Thanks. Unfortunately the site is not too much of a help. Most of it is under construction and the rest is very non-user friendly.

Can I ask if you would be comfortable changing distros? Linpus isn't a particularly well supported and even here there aren't many people familiar with it. If you do feel up to installing a new distro, Ubuntu would be an excellent choice as it is reasonably easy to use and has a large and devoted user base. Help for Ubuntu is plentiful.

Anyway, for the wireless bit, we need to know what chipset the card is using. With the card plugged in, open a console window and run the command lspci. Somewhere in the output should be an entry for your wireless dongle and hopefully it will list the chipset.

As far as the external hard drive goes, any Linux worth its weight should automatically pick it up and put an icon on your desktop (assuming it connects via USB). If this isn't what is happening for you, please describe what is happening.

Wouldn't you need to use lsusb to identify a USB dongle? lspci will identify the internal wireless device.

Which Aspire One do you have? I have the AOA150-1049, it came with XP Home. Mine has the Atheros AR242x chipset on the internal wireless device, which is very easy to set up on Ubuntu 8.10. I've been using it a couple of months w/o issue. External hard drives, thumb drives, etc, have been no problem at all for me. I've used Linpus before, but some folks are sold on it I guess, because it comes preconfigured on a lot of the AAO's..

Good luck

The lspci command also picks up USB devices (usually) and tends to be more informative than lsusb.

Thank you guys. Actually, I am a bit green on OP etc. All that I know is that I have the Linpus Linux Lite installed and I am finding it a bit hard to deal with this OP. I am used to XP. However, I fear that if I change to XP, the computer will run very slow and will be more prone to viruses when on internet.

In my experience, changing to XP does result in a slower machine and it certainly would be more vulnerable.

So if you could indicate which direction you intend to go (switching to a better supported distro or providing the information needed so we can get Linpus working better) it would help.

Do you have the Aspire one w/ a hard drive, or with an SSD? The Aspire One should have an internal wireless device (at least mine does), is there any particular reason you feel you must use the dongle?

I don't have any experience w/ either of those two external devices, but most external hard drives should work "out of the box"... I've got 3 or 4 external drives, thumb drives, etc, and all have worked right out of the box.

I've got Ubuntu 8.10 running on my Aspire one, and it runs perfect. Only thing that doesnt work out of the box, is Wireless, and it takes all of about 30sec to get started.

Actually, I would aim to try first to have a new experience in Linux. However, if things are too complicated for me, then probably, I would go for an XP change maybe increasing RAM and installing AVG.

Sorry, because I forgot. My Aspire one is with internal hard disc.

HSDPA if I'm not mistaken is for a 3G Wireless service like Verizon/Qualcom.. not wireless as in 802.11b/g

In my experience, lspci has never listed my USB devices.. I've always had to use lsusb.. How interesting.

Sorry I do not see a how-to for Linpus Lite (Fedora Based) only this one that is Ubuntu based.
