SNMP trap and Device Status Information

Hi ,

I am learning from ground zero about SNMP.

I have briefly read through SNMP topic on some books.

I am wondering ,... How does the device status information being passed down to the SNMP agent?

MIB is explained in terms of the variables and it's structure..
but none is explained on the SNMP agent side.

Hope someone could enlighten me and would be much appreciate for any valuable inputs to my question.

Thanks in advance.

Justin

The "agent" would always be on the device in question, so it just finds out whatever it wants with arbitrary software, there's no formal interface there that SNMP itself relates to. Am I missing something?

Thanks for your reply.

By the way, is it necessary to install on the managed host with SNMP-agent and SNMP trap component ?

Any good books to start off from ground-zero to undertake the study of SNMP topic?

Thanks once again.

snmp trapping is TOTALLY separate from a normal SNMP agent. whilst they use OID's and MIB's the two services have no actual technical overlap whatsoever.
