SMTP server responds: Relaying denied, proper authentication required

Hi All:

setting up a new sendmail/dovecot server and so far can recieve email and retrieve it with a third party client such as Mozilla Thunderbird. the problem im experiencing is with SMTP authorization. first off, when i send email using pine from command-line email gets out but gets filtered as SPAM (something im attributing to a self-signed cert, any help in that dept is also appreciated) which i'm okay with for the time being. However, using the client i get a "relaying denied, proper authentication required" to which i have no idea how to remedy. i have seen previous threads on this issue and their responses have not helped me. PLEASE HELP! i'd really love to understand whats going on.

thanks

id like to add that i searched through maillog and got the name of the relay being denied, then added it to /etc/mail/relay-domains... this worked

however, im sure this is but a temporary fix merely for my own location.. and when i go home it will no longer work. if there is a broader solution that will allow relaying through smtp i'd LOVE you suggestions
