SMTP enable


I would like to know if it is possible to create an smtp account in the localhost to send emails from localhost

you don't need specific accounts to send email, any acount can usually do this. Clearly you're welcome to create your own if you wish.

unrelated to networking - moved to Linux - Newbie.

step 1. check for mail or mailx command // issue 'whereis mail' or 'whereis mailx' to find it.
step 2. if mail or mailx command is found follow the next step
step 3. # mail -s "Insert subject here" root@localhost

You can use mail or mailx command to send mail. For more information see man page, command is given below.

# man mail

or

# man mailx

please install mailx-x.x.x-x86.rpm for your server. And try the same. If you don't have the rpm you can download it from here

If this is for your Fedora or Redhat system, mailx is in the std repos.
In fact they are part of the std install (normally).
My mailx is in /bin/mailx for RHEL5 & RHEL6.
