I finally got the printing working under Linux! SMC sent me a detailed setup file but it wouldn't work as they directed me to name the printer queue "LPD". Tonight I tried naming the queue "LPT1" and voila, it worked.
To set up printing, open up the printer configurator, ...start applications/system settings/printing, once the gui opens up (you'll be prompted for root access), click NEW, (or edit if you already have an entry) and set it to the following: name whatever you want for printer and description, under the queue type tab, select "Networked Unix (LPD) " from the drop down list, enter the logon address of your router, in my case 192.168.2.1, for the "server", and enter LPT1 for the "Queue" entry. Select your printer and driver, apply the changes, and you should be able to print a test page.
Hope this helps anyone else long suffering
