SMB printing to Windows shares
I have an HP Print Server Appliance serving 8 printer shares in a Windows
Workgroup. On my Windows boxes, I have no problem connecting to these shares and setting up printing. I've just installed RH 9.0 and started setting up printing. I can print direct to any of these network printers ( using Jetdirect setting in Linux ). However, I would like to print through the HP Print Server Appliance. If I select the SMB protocol, I can see the server, and list the shares with no problem. When I select a share, and click on forward, I'm asked to enter a username and passwd. Read the help, and it said put that username and passwd on the server. That was no help .. got same problem. How do I get past this? NOTE: I am a die-hard Windows user. There is no way I'm going to edit a file to do this. How do I simply click on something and get past this? I assume it is a local security setting on the Linux box. johns |
If this print server allows guest access over smb then try username quest and no password.

Never mind, I figured it out
Looking closely at the queue share name, I realized that the last
letter was missing .. Xerox3400inG11 should have been Xerox3400inG114. So I added the last letter, and just ignored the username, passwd, workgroup, and the printer set up with no problems. I also noticed that Linux was doing that to many of the sharenames .. truncating them. I wonder how many Linux newbies have struggled with this trying to set up passwds etc and getting nowhere. johns |
