I'm using Fedora Core 2 - attempting to browse the windows network with Network Servers - but some machines fail to allow the user to connect saying

The folder contents could not be displayed

You do not havethe permissions necessary to view the contents of "Windows Network: [machine name]".

But to that same machine if I know the share name and attempt to connect to that, (eg smb://win2k/docs) it actually asks me for the username, domain and password. Browsing just to that machine doesn't even give me the chance to enter in the username and password, thus not allowing me to see the shared folders on the machine.

This didn't seem to happen in Fedora Core 1 - although browsing the network in Core 1 did seem to crash alot where as this hasn't fallen down on me yet - just doesn't let me browse for shares either.

Any advice?

paul, do you mind to tell me how to browse the windows network?? i'm currently using FC2, but i dont know how to browse my LAN through "network server" with nautilus. can you show me how?? thankz...

As long as the networking support has been installed (samba I think) - it should be just a case of double clicking on Network Servers, or choosing the icon from the red hat start menu,

The problem I had was that double clicking on a computer in that network folder sometimes would not work, but if you entered in a path to a share

eg

smb://paulscomputer/cdrive


then it would work and ask for my username, password and domain - but it wouldn't actually display the shares available by going to the root machine share

smb://paulscomputer

Yes, the SMB client is not 100% functional in this release (Fedora Core 2).

However

Go Start -> Browse Filesystem in there File -> Connect to server
you will be asked for the Name and the URL of your share
Enter the Name you want,as URL type something like

smb://windowsservername/sharename

you get an icon on Desktop, when you click it you will be promted for username and password.

when i try to mount with that cifs thing told me at http://www.fedorafaq.org/
i get an error msg that share could not be found
("mount error: could not find target server. TCP name ovoda/a not found rc = 9")
i ty mount or smbmount i get "Could not resolve mount point"

this command will display available the share names
smbclient -U yournetusername -L yournetserver

even if you mount a smbfs , the browse will hang if you try to browse the link.
To Update smbclient, goto

http://www.samba.org/

Download the binaries (rpm-s) related to FC2 and samba and install them
rpm -Uvh samba-client*.rpm (may have dependencies)

create a directory in /mnt/ (best with your share name) then

mount -t smbfs -o username=yournetusernname //yournetserver/yournetshare /mnt/yournewdir

In Debian there's a package called libgnomevfs2-extra
GNOME virtual file-system (extra modules) that brings :
* the bzip2 module;
* the smb module, to browse Windows shares.

That solve the problem from integrating smb protocol in Nautilus, try searching the same package or similiar
