smartd failed
I am running FC3 with XP, using two sata drives in a 3GHz Dell. On boot up I always get a message that smartd failed, but I don't know of any problems. What does this mean? Is this related to the fact that I am running sata drives? What is the significance of the smartd failure?

I've had this happen on every Fedora system I've installed, and never actually had any problems arise, so you should be ok. I'd also like to know why this is so.

You'll have to check your BIOS and ensure that SMART is enabled for you drive. SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System) is a 'low level thingy' that's build into the hard drive to detect weakening sectors before they become bad sectors. smartd is a utility that helps track that on the higher level OS as well.

smartd does not currently work with SATA drives. It is relatively easy to get it to work with IDE drives, but that won't help you with your SATA.
