Airdroid is good to transfer data, I use another Android Assistant tool, with it, I can choose to transfer data via USB or wifi. Almost all file types supported like sms, contacts and media files.

Such as the Android Data Manager,it was similar to the mobile phone the housekeeper , it supports mobile data transmission, editing, backup ,,,,

not available for GNU/Linux.
anyhow, i use aafm - a siple, genius idea. just a python gui wrapper around adb.
