Smallest Linux distribution to run VirtualBox

Hi all,
What is the minimal Linux distribution that allows running VirtualBox?
I'm trying to save on disk space, decrease overhead, and increase speed.
Alternatively, how to remove unnecessary programs from Ubuntu?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

you can try Damn Small Linux.

Regards

Damn Small Linux runs a 2.4 kernel, which is not supported by Virtualbox.
How do you plan to use that box, do you run the VMs with a local display or are they accessed over the network?
In any case I would begin with a minimal install of your distro of choice and then add only those packages that are absolutely necessary for what you want to achieve.

Yes, i didn't remember that DSL has kernel 2.4 again.
Nothing ;)

Look at AntiX. It runs happily in 128MB (64 if you use Dillo instead of Firefox and Ted instead of LibreOffice Writer) and installs to 1˝GB of hard drive: you don't get much smaller. I know nothing about Virtualbox, but here's someone who's using it with AntiX:

I thinak there seems to be a misunderstanding. The OP is asking for a platform to run Virtualbox on top of it, not something to run in Virtualbox, if I understand that correctly.

Oh dear, so he is! But AntiX is small and fast and it does have a recent kernel, so it might do.

Crunchbang will work. Even found instructions. Don't know if it's THE smallest... but it's pretty small.

Debian netinstall: http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/

I'm with snowpine on this one...

Why not go with proxmox or consider a JeOS distro?

I suppose you could get something even smaller like Austrumi or Slitaz or such to work with a lot of effort.

Might even be able to do a one of a kind LFS.

Personally, because I'm familiar with it, I'd do a base install of Debian with no X then add the VirtualBox repository, install VirtualBox with apt-get and see how far it got me. If you're lucky it would drag in the minimum requirements.
I feel like trying it now but sadly won't have the time for a few days at least.

I have tried to use DSL-N for this purpose, it boots fast and runs fine (live). I haven` t, however been able to install t disk. I suspect that there is a problem with grub installation

I’ve tried both DSL & Tiny Core Linux. Unfortunately, both of them are not as small and fast as OpenWrt.
Definitely you can save CPU & memory utilization, and also HDD space with OpenWrt.
