My linux box endured a very hot day yesterday, a real scorcher, in a room which has no airconditioning.
When I attempted to re-startx in the evening the response time has reduced by the order of many many times what it was.
Any ideas what could be wrong with the machine?

man, can be a couple of things... from cpu-fan to controllers...
my suggestion is ...
reboot the machine and come into your BIOS....
If it is not too old, you can get info about temperature and fan speed ...
this will tell you how hot is still there... If the temperature is too high, some fan is gone....
if not, check the temperature sensors inside.. they are like small antenne... : )
if there is no problem with fan and the temperature is adequated, some hardware is gone...
Anyway, i advice to open the child and check inside...
take look.. plug every cable again... see if something is toasted...
