Slow X on Mandrake 9.1 on a Cyrix pr300
After installing mandrake on one of my machines, I decided to see if it would run on an old Cyrix PR300 (233mhz core), with 96megs of ram.
I found that minimum system requirements to run X were a pentium class processor and 64megs of ram, so i went ahead with the installtion. Everything installed ok, but when I try to start x, it loads the blue background, waits a couple of minutes, shows the task bar for about 1 second then it dissapears, and just does nothing.. (the hard drive makes noises every once in a while, but doesnt seem to actully do anything). Is this a software side problem, or is the hardware too low spec, dispite the system requirements? EDIT: its just came up with an error message "Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: Too many open files" :S? |
Even if you do get it working, it will be very slow. I suggest lighter distro.

That doesn't really help me. -_-'
