Slow Mandrake 8.0

Is there anyway to speed this distro up a bit? It's a good bit slower than Redhat 7.1 was. Also, the window manager for Gnome (Nautilus) is especially slow. Is there any hope for this P3 450, or is it just too much for it to handle?

you can always take out any processes your not using.. like apache, if your not using a web server..... things like that should speed you up.. couldn't say how much, but probably by default, you have processes running you don't use or need.

Yep. Done that. But unfortunately I am running apache. But i have eliminated a few things I don't need. If I change to a different window manager could that speed things up a bit?

possibly, you can try a lighter manager like wmaker or i use xfce which is small and fast.. you can try to recompile your kernel to suit your needs as well.

Cool, thanks for the input. I changed to IceWM which seemed to speed things up considerably. But how do I change file managers? Nautilus is still very slow.

i don't like nautilus. you can just uninstall it and use the previous default, gmc instead. i find it much less patronising, and it does everything just as well. oh except that you sadly can't resize the desktop icons to 400pixels wide. how will you live without that useful feature??

i can't really remember how i removed nautilus and made gmc appear instead, i think i just reased the rpms and gmc appeared next boot. i think ther were a few error messages tho first time...
