slow internet connect and no lan connection
 

I've installed Mandrake 8.1 and find that my internet connection is extremely slow, in fact so slow I don't connect to any websites. I can logon to my isp via my 56k ext modem but after that...nothing. - I get good ping times out of my allocated isp ip address (I don't know if this is useful to know). A similar problem in these forums mentioned checking/changing MTU rates (not sure what this does) but I've checked the ppp connection for this value and it's 1500 when connected. Windows (sorry!) works fine with the same isp.

2nd problem : I want to use a 2nd pc with Smoothwall installed on it. Both pc's are connected to a hub. I'm unable to ping either pc from the other one. I can ping the pc's own ip. The message is 'destination host unreachable' when pinging the other pc - the individual pc's ips are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 with a standard c class mask.

If anyone can help with one or both these problems I will be very grateful as this is now driving me mad !!

check /etc/resolv.conf

make sure the domain name server is at least your gateway machine and at best your ISP's dns... that could be a problem
