slow copy/performance... between volumes
hi guys
We are seeing weird issues on my Linux Suse 10, it has lotus 8.5 and 1 filesystem for OS and another for Lotus Database. the issue is when the Lotus service starts wait on top is very high about 25% percent and in general CPU usage is very high we found that when this happens if we go to Lotus Filesystem a simple ls takes a long time to run.... trying and trying we created another filesystem to copy lotus files to this new filesystem...but we found the copy is very slow so my question is how can I tune this old filesystem? how can I check disk integrity? the idea make this filesystem faster since we think when Lotus access it data to server to clients that slows down the server.... check this vmstat stats http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/8761/vmstat.png any idea thanks |
General disk heath checks
My answers are IDE based, adapt as necessary.
> how can I tune this old filesystem? I don't know anything about a Lotus file system, but I'd check the disk health first if it use to run well under the same load. If that checks out, check the Lotus file system documentation. > how can I check disk integrity? Check the S.M.A.R.T. status and do some long and short tests (if the drive is capable) via smartmontools' smartctl. Try some disk cache and raw read timings via hdparm's -t and -T tests. > the idea make this filesystem faster since we think when Lotus > access it data to server to clients that slows down the server.... More memory means more caching opportunities. More spindles can reduce seek latency and increase throughput. Start simple with OS and App on different disks. Go crazy with RAID levels. Maybe some SAN action can give you better throughput than local disks depending on your system configuration. If the "Lotus file system" is a database with files on some standard file system, eg ext3, research tuning options for it. |
