Question Slow and poorly working Karmic Koala after upgrade from Hardy

Hi!
I reinstalled Ubuntu on my HP pc-40 computer. I used to run Hardy Heron and am now running Karmic Koala. The cd drive which had had issues for a while, broke after finishing the install, when I tried to get the cd out...
I dont know if this has anything to do with it, or if my computer is too old for Karmic Koala, or if possibly the harddrive didn't appreciate being overwritten a second time - but the graphics are not working well (small squares of previous windows linger in my present browser window*)
, everythin is much slower, and many applications come up without a border, or their windows cant be moved with the mouse.
To top it off, while I tried to fix a bug with the terminal (no border) and uninstalled it, I couldnt install it back. So no terminal, which really makes even a newbie like me sad
Thankful for any help. If I cant solve it in a few days I will probably try to install a smaller distro via USB - I think Slax can be installed straight to USB without a live cd?

Hi Gnyrfta, this is just my opinion, but... Hardy Heron is a "long term support (LTS)" release, which means it is more stable and less buggy than the average Ubuntu release. Karmic Koala is very buggy (even for Ubuntu) and a lot of Ubuntu users have decided to skip it. Lucid Lynx coming in April will be the next LTS, maybe it is worth sticking with Hardy until April and just using the LTS releases?

To answer your specific questions:

It sounds like a video driver issue. Please post what kind of video card you have if you want targeted advice. You can also try going to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers to see if any video drivers are available for your card.

You can install any Linux distro without a CD using Unetbootin: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net

Thanks snowpine and Agrouf for replying!
Well, "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system" is what it says
under hardware drivers.
I went in to Unetbootin, and tried to do a "frugal install" to the harddrive, but on rebooting it still goes into Karmic Koala...
The boot order is USB CD Harddrive in BIOS, should I change something there? Or is frugal install something you only do from Windows?
The reason i tried this first is just that the Usb I have at home isnt bootable with linux.

To be honest, I am not sure whether Unetbootin Frugal Install works with Karmic (which uses the beta Grub 2). Maybe try asking your question over on the Unetbootin forums: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=79
