SLES 11 root password does not update immediately

I have a SLES 10 system and a SLES 11 system. When I change the root password on the SLES 10 system, I can immediately log into root with the new password. When I change the password on the SLES 11 system, it takes 5-10 minutes before I can login with the new password. During that time, I can log in using the previous root password. The passwd file does update when I change the password, I just can't log into root with that password for a few minutes.

I think it is probably a setting rather than a version issue.

Does anybody what might be set to cause the delay to root password in SLES 11?

please READ the SUSE Enterprise Linux Server 11 documentation
and release notes ( if this is SELS11 , no service pack-- no sp1,sp2,or sp3-- it is the 2009 documentation

-- this is the current SELS 11 sp3 documentation
https://www.suse.com/documentation/sles11/

-- release notes for the OLD - no service pack
http://www.novell.com/linux/releasen.../SUSE-SLES/11/

and you really should think about installing the current service pack 3

I read through the documentation provided and it didn't indicate why my password would not update immediately.

I don't think it is a version issue, but rather a configuration issue.

Is there a setting or configuration within SLES that would cause my root password to not update for 5-10 minutes even though I changed it using passwd?
