Slax bootable usb - startx: No such file or directory

Sorry if this is an old thread, but I can't find a thread relating to my problem.

I used Yumi 2.0.1.8 and created a bootable usb with Slax 7.0.8 32bit.

It boots up the slax, when I enter startx it gives me the following error:

sh: can't execute 'startx': No such file or directory.

I tried running startx from init 5 as well with no success.

startx is a shell script usually installed in the /usr/bin directory of the root system.

All it is saying is that it isn't installed.

You don't run startx from init 5. Runlevel 5 is reserved for display manager startup, and the display manager has to be installed.

It sounds like you have a base installation, but none of the X tools installed (I'm not certain, as it IS possible to install X utilities/libraries without an X server, in which case you won't get startx or a display manager).

Hi jpollard,

I checked inside the iso image under /slax/ and found 3 files that "indicates" that there is a display manager:
* 02-xorg.sb 12MB
* 03-kdeps.sb 55MB
* 04-kde.sb 23MB

So I googled the 04-kde.sb file and it looks like it is a base kde desktop.

I'm at a loss, all the google searches I have done indicates that it has KDE.

I am going to burn the same iso that I used in YUMI and burn it to a DVD and see if it makes the same.

You may have a display manager installed, and you wouldn't need to use startx.

If you go to runlevel 5 you should get a login window.

Different distributions package things a bit differently - fedora for instance, only installs the display manager IF you select a workstation install.

If you pick a server (no gui) and add a desktop, you still miss a display manager for login, as they are packaged separately - one for each of the desktops that have one.

Get the usb file maybe and try it.

Pretty sure it ought to boot into a gui by default. Might it be in single user or recovery mode? I'll agree that it could be a video driver issue that maybe you need to use a boot time option. Slax options are kind of unique maybe similar to knoppix. I'm sure they are some place.

I found the culprit.

It was YUMI-2.0.1.8 all along.

For some reason it is not able to load slax data from /multiboot/slax...

When I tried YUMI-2.0.1.2 and YUMI-2.0.0.5 it worked like a charm.

I guess the next step is to forward the issue to YUMI so they can patch it.

Thanx for all your advice.

Thanks for the update and solution.

Same Issue

Good thing I found your post. I was going crazy! Yumi worked with all the others, but Slax left me at a # prompt. Startx didn't work.

Wondering if you ever got anything going. You say it can't work with the MULTIBOOT folder. Any way around it?

Thanks.
