Slackware Start-up file etc/rc.4
 

Hi I made some changes to try and use gnome instead of kde as but out of my own inexperience with slack I have stuffed it up. On start-up I get an error in ini rc file and do not get to root or kde. Please help me but please be very prescriptive (step by step)approach.

Well, first of all I think you should describe your problem.
What error are you getting exactly when trying to boot and what did you do ?

I need to be able to edit the etc/rc.4 file, currently it get to where it tells me it has a problem with ini rc.4 file and says something to fast respawning and I do not get further than that. I know in Ubuntu in startup you can press F8 and enter safe mode and get to the terminal that way but I do not know how to in Slack.regards

When you are still in LILO, select the kernel you want to boot from and at the prompt at the bottom add either the word single or the number 1 after it. That should boot you into single mode which will bypass using rc.4.

By the way, messing with rc.4 to use gnome instead of KDE is not the best idea. Once you've got this fixed, we can try for something more standard.

Thank you I got in by typing Linuxx 3 but cannot figure out what is wrong with the rc.4 file. Please tell me the easier way to switch between KDE and Gnome.

There are two ways of doing it. If you are in runlevel 4 (the gui login) you should be able to select what environment to use from one of the menus on the screen. If you boot into runlevel 3, you use the xmconfig command to select the environment that will run when you run the startx command.

As for rc.4, if you would post some error messages or at least explain what you did to it, it might help us solve the problem.
